The high school is a four-year public school located in Oakhurst and serves the communities of Oakhurst, Wanamassa, Wayside, and West Allenhurst. There are just over 1,000 students at the high school and 105 teachers. The high school overs over 18 Advanced Placement courses and works with Monmouth University to offer a dual credit program. Residents of the area often identify more with these subsections than with Ocean Township itself, giving the area a diverse identity. The township encompasses 10.8 miles and includes three main areas: Oakhurst, Wanamassa, and Wayside. It also has many other neighborhoods in part or in full, including Edgemere, Eberon Park, Green Grove, Colonial Terrace, West Allenhurst, Poplar, Deal Lake, and several others. Many of Ocean Township's neighborhoods feature beautiful homes and parks, and there's a spot for individuals and families of all kinds. Some areas, like Deal Park and West Allenhurst, are well-established and upscale, with expansive houses. In contrast, areas like Wayside and Colonial Terrace offer a more affordable option for families and newcomers. Not Too Big, Not Too Small While big cities can offer visitors exciting experiences, many people prefer the peace, quiet, and community of smaller municipalities. The historic city of Trenton is directly west of Ocean Township, and Philadelphia is just over the border with Pennsylvania on the Delaware River. The municipality is located in the middle of the state, giving residents access to other locations throughout the state, including Atlantic City, Newark, and Jersey City. It's Not the Only One Strangely enough, the area we're located in isn't the only Ocean Township in New Jersey. Our municipality is located in Monmouth County, but neighboring Ocean County also includes Ocean Township. Ocean County extends along the coast directly south of Monmouth County and provides many areas for seaside excursions, including beaches, boardwalks, and marinas. What's in a Name? Although it may seem surprising, Ocean Township doesn't include any seaside areas. Ocean Township's name comes from the fact that it originally encompassed parts of coastal Monmouth County. If this comes as a surprise, you'll be happy to know that the ocean is only about a mile away from the township's western border. A short walk or drive through Allenhurst, Deal, Asbury Park, or Elberon puts you on the seashore and gives you access to its attractions, including beaches, seaside restaurants, and boardwalks. A short trip north takes travelers right up to the shore of Sandy Hook Bay. This body of water is part of Raritan Bay, which separates New Jersey from Staten Island and Brooklyn. The Bayshore area includes beaches, biking trails, and lighthouses that provide an excellent view of the New York City skyline. In Ocean Township, the sights and sounds of the sea are never far away. A Long History New Jersey is one of America's original 13 states, so Ocean Township definitely has a long history. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape people, who also lived in sections of Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York. The area was later settled by emigrants from the Netherlands and Great Britain, who were progressively joined by Scandinavians, Irish, Scots, Italians, and Black Americans from the South. During the Revolutionary War, Monmouth County was home to one of the most significant battles between the British and the Continental Army at Monmouth Courthouse. During this battle, the training of Baron von Steuben paid off, and the American soldiers could go toe-to-toe with their experienced adversaries. During the colonial period, much of New Jersey was wild and had vast woodland areas. As the 19th and 20th centuries went on, the area gained many new residents and became more heavily urbanized, partly due to the growth of New York and its bedroom suburbs. While Monmouth County dates back to 1683, Ocean Township is a much younger entity and was created by the New Jersey legislature in 1849. Famous Residents Despite its small area, Ocean Township has produced its fair share of prominent Americans. These individuals include entertainers, businesspeople, athletes, and political leaders. Some of the area's most notable natives include NFL players Bob Davis, Kenny Pickett, Phil Villapiano, actress Ashley Tisdale, author and talk show host Wendy Williams, and producer Gloria Monty. This expansive outdoor area allows plenty of seaside seating for Summer Stage events. The Stone Pony is a general admission venue, so you will want to arrive early. They have first-come-first-serve bar stools throughout. Otherwise, it's standing room only. All ages are welcome to attend unless otherwise noted, and everyone attending the venue needs their own ticket. You can purchase tickets at The Stone Pony Box Office, Ticketmaster, or Blackbird Presents on Cookman Avenue. Tickets are sold at the door until the event is sold out. Parking Paid parking is available by paying a meter or downloading the Asbury Park Parking app. A few paid parking lots are located on Fourth, Second, and Lake Avenues. Silverball Museum Arcade For a day of fun and challenging games, head to the Silverball Museum Arcade on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. This unique attraction features the Pinball Hall of Fame and there are 600 games in circulation at the various locations. Test your skills with a number of classic pinball and arcade games, such as Space Mission, Friendship 7, Discs of Tron, and Street Fighter II. After working up an appetite playing games, stop by the Silverball Café for a slice of pizza, a hot dog, snacks, drinks, and ice cream. Silverball Museum is located at 1000 Ocean Ave. and is open Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Full- and half-day passes are available, depending on how long you want to play. more Township of Ocean Historical Museum The Township of Ocean Historical Museum features the Eden Woolley House, which is the only remaining Woolley House in Ocean Township. The house was built in the 1700s and was originally a one-and-a-half story building. It was located at the corner of Route 35 and Deal Road. In 1835, Eden Woolley inherited the house and added on to it a Greek Revival style. In 2005, the house was moved to Joe Palaia Park. The house is now a repository of history dating back 250 years and features permanent and traveling exhibits, as well as photography and artwork galleries. Take a tour to learn more about the area's rich history or attend a lecture for a more in-depth look. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum is located at 703 Deal Rd. in Ocean, about 35 miles south of Asbury Park. The museum is open Tuesday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m., Thursday evenings March 15 to December 15 from 7 to 9 p.m., and the first and second Sunday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. Historic Village of Allaire The Historic Village of Allaire is a living history museum in Allaire, about 10 miles southwest of Asbury Park. It was once a factory town that produced iron and was known as Howell Iron Works. Co. The community was self-sufficient and included a blacksmith shop, bakery, boarding house, carpentry and pattern making shop, church, general store, school, and homes. Today, you can tour the village and learn more about its history by participating in hands-on activities. Step inside The Row House to see an example of the interior of the only remaining row house, which often housed 10 or more people. Stop by the General Store to browse reproductions of 18th- and 19th-century goods. You can also check out the Carriage House, Blacksmith Shop, Manager's House, and more. The Historic Village at Allaire is located at 4263 Atlantic Avenue in Allaire. The hours vary. When the weather is beautiful and sunny and you're looking for something entertaining to do, there's no shortage in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Check out these fun outdoor activities to enjoy with a date, your family, or by yourself in Asbury Park. Asbury Park Splash Park On hot days, cool off while playing in the water at the Asbury Splash Park.  The sprayground has a rubber ground and covers a large area with features spread out so kids have plenty of room to goof off, burn up energy, and keep the heat at bay. Kids will have a blast running through the sprinklers that shoot out of the ground, getting "watered" by an oversized watering can, and anticipating the rush of water from a cup that overflows and spills onto them. Pack a cooler and snacks to enjoy while spending the afternoon playing in the sun. Plastic lawn chairs are spread around the park providing plenty of seating for parents to stay dry while the kids play. The Asbury Park Splash Park is located at 1100 Ocean Ave. and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Rates are $9 for children and $5 for adults. Evening passes are available for $6 for children and $3 for adults. more The Casino Designed by New York Beaux-Arts architects Warren and Wetmore in 1929, who also designed New York's Grand Central Station, the Casino is a slice of vintage Asbury Park. Although no longer functioning, the abandoned building still draws in visitors to wander around the facility and imagine what it was once like in its heyday. The casino was once home to rides, video poker, a flea market, a skating rink, and a skate park. As time went by, the building suffered destruction and parts of it were finally torn down in 2006. What remains is still fascinating to walk around and provides excellent opportunities for amazing and artistic pictures. The Casino is located at 700 Ocean Ave. and is open to the public 24 hours a day. Admission is free. Asbury Park Boardwalk The Asbury Park Boardwalk is an iconic landmark sure to delight both the young and old. Spend the day walking along the boardwalk, smelling the salty air, doing a little people-watching, and seeing the waves crash against the shoreline. Set on the historic beachfront, the boardwalk is adorned with colorful murals and features eclectic boutiques, tasty food, and some of the best live music around. Bring your pup and stop by Wonder Dog Yappy Hour to have a drink while your pup plays in the pools and sandboxes in the fenced-in area. Throughout the years, musicians and bands have had strong ties to the area, including Jon Bon Jovi, Count Basie, Ramones, and Bruce Springsteen, whose debut album is entitled "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J." Therefore, it's no wonder the area features numerous concerts and festivals during the year. Keep reading to learn about four events you should check out this summer. Rebelution Performing for more than a decade, Rebelution comes to the Stone Pony Summer Stage on August 4 as part of its Good Vibes Summer Tour 2019. Much of the California-based band's style, songwriting, and instrumentals stem from Jamaican roots, but the band also brings soul, folk, and R&B influences together. This performance also features special guests Protoje and Collie Buddz. Hi-Tide Summer Holiday Returning for a sixth year, the Hi-Tide Summer Holiday will take place from August 16 through 18 at Asbury Lanes and The Asbury Hotel. The weekend includes live music, vintage cocktails, vendors, pool parties, and midnight record hops. Among the bands scheduled to perform include The Neanderthals, Eddie Angel's Guitar Party featuring The Primitive Finks, Deke Dickerson and Bloodshot Bill, Insect Surfers, and The Swingin' Palms, among others. more Summer Freestyle Jam The Summer Freestyle Jam brings several bands together who will perform near the Boardwalk on August 17. Put together by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, this event features an evening of freestyle music. Two well-known bands scheduled to appear include Judy Torres, also known as "The Queen of Freestyle" on New York's WKTU, and the Latin trio TKA. Other performers scheduled to attend include George Lamond, Cover Girls, Sweet Sensations, Cynthia and Johnny O., Noel, and Rob Base. Sea.Hear.Now Festival Scheduled for September 21 and 22 at North Beach of Asbury Park, the Sea.Hear.Now festival not only provides music but it seeks to give attendees a chance to make a difference in the world around them. It remains committed to bringing awareness to issues dealing with the ocean environment, particularly climate change and the global plastic waste crisis. Now in its second year, the event brings artists, professional surfers, and local restaurants together for two days of festivities. More than two dozen bands are scheduled to perform. The Dave Matthews Band and The Lumineers will headline at the festival. Other bands include The B-52s, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Blind Melon, Dropkick Murphys, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise. In addition, about 20 surfers will be in attendance, including Sam Hammer, Autumn Hayes, Balaram Stack, and Andrew Gesler.
